Formed from natural materials, rockwool has no chemicals. It’s safe to use as a rooting medium and substrate for plants. On the other hand, human exposure to rockwool is a health issue.
Due to its properties, rockwool medium can cause irritation to skin, eyes and lungs. Sterile: Since rockwools a man made product, it’s has no weed seeds, disease, pathogens or pests.
This also means it has no nutrients, organic compounds or microbes. Plants growing in rockwool need a hydroponic solution to meet their food needs.
Due its structure, rockwool drains excess water quickly. Yet, it holds small amounts of water near the base of the cube. This property allows plants to attain enough water while letting more air to circulate and oxygenate the roots.
This difference in moisture levels from the top to the bottom of the cube makes rockwool ideal for hydroponics. But it can also make it difficult to know when to water the plants. This can result in over watering.
As a rock product, rockwool doesn’t break down or erode over time. Boiling or steaming between grows will kill pathogens. It will last forever in a landfill, making it a not so eco friendly product.
DO wear protective gear to keep yourself safe when handling rockwool material. The fibers are irritating to skin, lungs, and eyes so it’s important to protect yourself. At the minimum, wear a dust mask to prevent inhaling fibers into your lungs.
Wear eye protection and long sleeves if there is a chance of prolonged contact with your skin
